“Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2:10-11).

Charles Wesley took this exhortation seriously. Indeed, he worshipped The Shepherd with almost every breath that entered his lungs. Wesley wrote 8,989 hymns by writing an average of 10 lines of verse every day for 50 years. His songs of praise included such favorites as “Christ the Lord is Risen Today”, “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing”, and “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”. Adoration, admiration and appreciation are the bedrocks upon which worship stands. Praise, thanksgiving and biblically-focused singing are the pillars of worshipful expression.

A truly reverent God-worshipper will think worshipfully, talk worshipfully and live worshipfully, expressing his or her heart of praise in work, study, recreation, entertainment and in times of solitude. Your mind, your heart and your emotions are God’s gifts to you. Directing them back to their Creator is your gift to God.

 

 

1. Isaiah 25:1 – “O Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; for You have worked wonders, plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.” What is it about God’s faithfulness that inspires the depth of your soul to life your heart in worship?
2. Psalm 63:1 – “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” How does this beloved passage inspire your worship as you remember how God met you in your greatest times of desperation?
3. Habakkuk 3:17 & 18 – “Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit on the vines, though the yield of the olive should fail and the fields produce no food, though the flock should be cut off from the fold and there be no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.” How does this passage cause you to go ever deeper in your commitment of devotion to God in worship, even in times when God is literally all you have to cling to?
4. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” What does this passage teach you about The Shepherd you worship and His forward-thinking plan for your life?
5. James 3:10 – “…from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.” How does this passage search out, identify and exhort you to erase hypocrisy and double-mindedness in your worship?
6. Matthew 4:10 – “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”’” What is Jesus’ firm command in this passage saying to you?

 

1. John 13:15 – “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” From today’s scripture, how does THE Shepherd inspire you to shepherd your flock?
